How to Create Your Own Business Website With WordPress (Quickly)

Read Time:10 minsLanguages:

In today’s day and age, having a website is crucial for almost anyone, especially for business owners. Having a website allows you to present everything your business has to offer to the rest of the world.

With a website, you are not limited by customers in your local area. By bringing your business online, you can offer your products and services to people from a different state or even a different country.

Considering modern consumers spend more and more time online, creating a website for your business is the next logical step that will allow you to land new clients and customers and increase your revenue.

Thankfully, creating your website is not as hard as it seems nor does it require you to go out and hire a developer. In today’s tutorial, we’ll walk you through the process of setting up your business website with WordPress quickly.

How to Create Your Own Website With WordPress

One of the easiest ways to create your own website is with a platform like WordPress. WordPress is a free Content Management System that’s easy to use and it allows you to create both simple and complex websites as well as blogs. It’s also used on more than 28% of all websites on the Internet.

The best part about WordPress is the sheer amount of beautiful themes that allow you to create a stunning website and customize it with a few clicks of the mouse. On top of that, WordPress also has an impressive collection of free and paid plugins that allow you to extend the functionality of WordPress even more and add features such as social sharing buttons, contact forms, Google Maps, slideshows, and much more.

In fact, thanks to WordPress and a premium WordPress theme, anyone can create a website in a matter of hours. Let’s dive in and go through the steps of creating your site quickly with WordPress:

What You’ll Need to Get Started

Before actually setting up your site, there are a few things that you’ll need to consider and decide on. You’ll need to buy a domain name, a solid hosting plan, a premium WordPress theme, and have your initial content ready to go:

1. A Domain Name

The first thing you’ll need to do is decide on the domain name you’ll use for your site. The most logical choice is to choose your business name, paired with a .COM extension. This extension is the most popular one and most people expect a website to end with a .com. If you cannot buy the domain name with a .com extension, consider using a .NET or a local extension such as .US.

2. A Hosting Plan

Once you’ve settled on a domain name, you’ll need to purchase it as well as a hosting plan or server space that will allow you to store your site’s files and make your site accessible to the rest of the world. In most cases, you'll be able to purchase the domain name during the signup process for the hosting plan.

3. Premium WordPress Theme

Next on your list should be a premium WordPress theme. While it’s true that you can find free themes for WordPress, choosing a premium theme comes with several benefits. A premium theme will have all the features needed to create an attractive site and you'll also be able to contact the theme author if you need any help with the theme setup or customization.

For this tutorial, I'm using the popular Be WordPress theme, which is available on ThemeForest:

It comes with pre-made demos, a one-click demo importer, and customization options for making it your own. Here is one of the many business website designs you can put together with the Be theme:

You can set it up on your own host, which we'll show you how to do in this tutorial.

4. Content and Images

As a final step, you'll need to prepare all the content and images that will go on your site. Think about the pages you want to have and prepare a document with all the text ready to go on each page. You can also write a few blog posts in advance, so potential clients can get to know your products or services, and get a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes process.

Setting Up Your WordPress Business Site

Once you’ve signed up for the hosting plan and have all the content and images, you can begin setting up your site. You’ll need to install WordPress, your theme, required plugins, and create your pages.

1. Installing WordPress

Since we'll be creating the website with WordPress, the first step will be to install it onto your server. Log in to your cPanel with the username and password provided to you by your host. Next, find the Website Installers or One Click Installers section. Select WordPress and click Install.

Fill in the prompted info and click Install once again.

Wait for the installation to finish and you will see a message that WordPress has been installed and that you can now log in to your WordPress dashboard. Navigate over to and enter your login details. Remember to replace our domain name with your actual domain name.

2. Installing Your WordPress Theme

The next step is to install the premium theme you purchased. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Themes > Add new. On the next screen, click Upload Theme.

Select the zipped folder that contains the theme’s files then click Upload. Once installation is done, click Activate.

3. Install the Required Plugins

You’ll see a notification at the top of your screen prompting you to install the required WordPress plugins. Click the link that says Being Installing Plugins. On the next page, select all the plugins and then click Install in the drop down menu. When the plugins have been installed, go to Plugins > All Plugins and click on the link to Begin Activating Plugins.

Once all the plugins have been activated, it’s time to customize your WordPress theme and setup your pages.

How to Customize Your WordPress Business Website

A fairly easy way to create a website quickly is to make use of the demo content and pre-built layouts that come with the Be theme. This will save you a lot of time as you don’t have to create all the pages from scratch. Instead, you only need to replace the text and images with your own.

To get started, in your dashboard, go to Be Theme > Pre-Built Websites. As you can see from the screenshot (below), there are plenty of layouts to choose from, catering to a variety of industries. Browse through them until you find the one you like. Select the desired layout and then click the Install button.

You’ll get a notification that you need to reset the database if you have used demo content before but you can ignore that since this is a fresh install. Click on the Next button to proceed with the installation.

The next screen will ask you if you want to import all the demo content, including images and sliders or do you want to choose what to import. For the purposes of this tutorial, I’ve decided to import all the content. Once you’ve made your choice, click on the Install button and wait for the import process to finish.

After the content has been imported, you’ll be able to go to the WordPress theme options page to customize the colors, fonts, upload your logo and more.

When you’re done tweaking the style of the theme to match your branding, it’s time to replace the demo content with your own. Let’s start with the homepage.

In your dashboard, go to Pages > All Pages and find the page called Home. Hover over the title and then click on Edit Page. The Be Theme uses Muffin Builder which is a drag and drop page builder. When the page loads, you’ll be able to click on individual elements, style them, and replace the content with your own. Simply click on the pencil icon and you’ll be able to edit the contents.

You can repeat this for all the pages on your site and edit them to reflect the information about your business.

How to Get Even More Out of Your Business WordPress Website

After all the styling has been done, it’s time to enhance your WordPress business site with some extra plugins that will help you spread the word about your new site, get you more leads, and more customers. As mentioned before, WordPress comes with a plethora of plugins that extend the functionality of your site. Here are five plugins that every business site should have:

1. SEO Plugin

A good SEO plugin will help you optimize your pages and blog posts for search engines. After you install the plugin, you'll be able to enter specific keywords for the post or a page, optimize your title and meta description, and more.

There are plenty of SEO plugins available but one of the easiest ones to use is Yoast SEO plugin.

It allows you to manage page titles and meta descriptions for both posts and pages as well as redirect certain pages or create rules for search engine robots that tell them which pages should not be indexed. On top of that, it lets you create descriptions for social media networks such as Facebook and Google+ that will show up when someone shares your content.

2. Backup Plugin

A backup plugin is another essential WordPress plugin that should be installed on every business website. Having a backup of your website’s files and database will ensure that you can quickly restore your website if your server crashes or your website gets attacked by hackers. Without a backup plugin, you’d lose all your content, not to mention sales and potential clients.

With a plugin like Updraft Plus, you don’t have to worry however. This plugin lets you create both full and partial backups of your business website. The options allow you to set up recurring backups and store them in a location such as Dropbox.

3. Email Optin Plugin

You’ve probably heard the advice of building your email list if you want your business to thrive. That’s where an email optin plugin comes in handy. It connects with your email service provider like MailChimp or AWeber and allows you to display beautiful optin forms to anyone who visits your site.

A plugin like OptinPoint or MailChimp Popup will add the ability to control how your email optin forms look, when should they display, on which pages they should load, and much more.

4. Caching Plugin

One of the most important things you can do for your business website is to ensure it loads fast. Statistics show that consumers loathe a slow loading website so if you don’t want to lose potential clients and customers, you need to make sure your WordPress website is fast. On top of that, Google favors fast loading websites when it comes to search engine rankings.

A caching plugin like W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache can help you greatly increase the speed of your site. They convert dynamic pages into HTML static pages which load much faster and help your site displays faster for all your visitors.

5. Security Plugin

Finally, you’ll need a security plugin to protect your site from hackers and other security risks. A plugin like Sucuri can help monitor your site and prevent DDoS attacks, malware threats, brute force attacks, and more.
