How to Use Envato Elements Templates to Make A Business Card Design In Photoshop
Once you’ve found your perfect business card design template, it’s time to customize it and make it your own.
Before we actually dive into the template customization, let’s go over the basic terminology you need to understand when it comes to business card design so you'll have an easier time following the tutorial steps.
5 Key Terms to Understand for Business Card Design
Below, you'll find the five key terms you need to be familiar with so you can easily customize the design of your business card template.
- Bleed area. Bleed area refers to an area of your business card design that’s about ⅛ of an inch. This area is used to make sure your background colors or patterns cover the entire business card design instead of leaving it with white edges.
- Margin. The margin area occupies another ⅛ of an inch and ensures your design won’t be cut off when the business card is printed.
- Safe Zone. The safe zone is the largest portion of the business card design where you can safely place your business information and other design elements.
- Back of the business card. Back of the business card can be used to add a larger version of your logo or to add an interesting pattern or a background photo. You can also use it to share a coupon or a QR code that takes them to a special offer on your site.
- Front of the business card. Front of the business card is where you'll add your company name, your name and position, and the desired contact information.
Now that we’ve covered the most important terms, let’s take a look at how you can quickly customize an Envato Elements template in Photoshop.
How to Make Business Cards Using a Template Online
For the purposes of this tutorial, I’ll be using the Business Card template from Envato Elements. It features a clean and elegant design with a colored diagonal line that gives it extra visual appeal. Thanks to its clean lines, this type of business card can be used in any industry.
Step 1. Decide Which Information Will Go on Your Business Card
The first step is deciding which information will be on your business card. While you might be tempted to add all your social media profiles as well as your website and all the latest business card trends, keep in mind you’re working with limited space.
As such, it’s best to keep it simple and limit the information to your name, position, and primary contact information. This will ensure that your information can easily be read without making the design appear too cluttered.
Step 2. Choose Your Business Card Layout
Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see both vertical and horizontal business cards. If your chosen template came with both options, like the one used in the tutorial, you'll need to choose which layout you prefer.
If you prefer traditional layouts, sticking with a horizontal layout is a safe bet. However, if you want to stand out more, a vertical layout will work in your favor.
Step 3. Open Your Business Card in Photoshop
Now that you know which information to include and which layout you'll use, it’s time to get to work and customize your chosen business card design.
Open up Photoshop and then locate your business card template, right-click and select Open with Photoshop.
Alternatively, open the template from Photoshop by going to File > Open and then locate the template on your computer.
Step 4. Enter Your Business Information
Start by entering your business information. To do that, click on the downward caret next to the folder that says Back.
Locate the layer with the name, click on it to select it, and then click the T icon in the left-hand sidebar. Replace the name with your own and then press the check mark at the top bar to save the changes.
To change the other text, you'll need to repeat the steps above:
- Select the layer with the text you want to change.
- click the T icon.
- Enter your own information.
- Save the changes by pressing the check mark at the top.
Step 5. Customize the Fonts
Once you've entered your own information, let’s dig into the design. Select the name layer again and press the T icon. You’ll notice the font selector at the top. Click it to reveal all the fonts installed on your computer and then choose a font you’d like to use. Repeat this process for each text layer.
It’s best to stick to one font throughout your business card design as this will make your business card more visually appealing and easier to read. Choose a serif or sans-serif font that’s a part of your brand identity as decorative or script fonts will make your business card hard to read, not to mention your brand will be less cohesive.
Step 6. Customize the Colors
When you’re done customizing fonts, you’ll want to customize the colors to match your brand. To change the color of any text or design element, you'll need to click the text layer and then click the color picker at the top to enter your brand color HEX code. In this example, I’ve changed the text and the logo to a dark grey color.
Step 7. Customize the Back
With the front of the business card, done, it’s time to customize the back. To tweak any colors or fonts, all you've got to do is repeat the steps you used while you customized the front of the card.
Step 8. Export Your Design as a PDF
When you’re done customizing the design, the last step is to export your design as PDF. This will ensure it’s compatible with almost any printer. To do this, simply click on File > Save As PDF.
