How to Customize an InDesign Annual Report Template
So, you've found the perfect InDesign annual report design template—now what? Let's look at some quick tips to help you jump right in and start designing right now.
In this demonstration, we'll use the following Adobe InDesign report template design. You're welcome to download it and follow along. Or use a different annual report template of your choosing.

Let's get started:
1. Understand the Pages From Your InDesign Annual Reports Design
When working in Adobe InDesign, you likely will see one page (or one spread) by default. To preview all your pages and easily browse through them, turn to your Pages Panel.
We can open the Pages Panel by going to Window > Pages.
Then, looking at the Pages Panel, there are a few important things we can do here:
- If your creative annual report has several pages, scroll through the list of them here. Double-click on a preview to view the selected page fully in your work area.
- Click and hold, then drag, to rearrange pages
- Click on the trash can icon at the bottom of the panel to delete pages
- Click on the plus sign at the bottom of the panel to add a new page
Note that you can also Add, Move, and Delete pages by right-clicking on the page's preview in the Pages Panel.

2. Using Guides in Your Report Design Template
When you open up an InDesign annual report template, you might notice a bunch of lines on your report layout template. For example, check out the screenshot below.
These lines are Guides and you can use them to help line things up in your layout. They don't print with your work. They're visual guidelines to assist you in the design process.
We can easily toggle them on or off by going to View > Grids & Guides > Hide Guides/Show Guides.

3. Edit the Text of Your Report Template in InDesign
One of the major things you'll likely want to edit in your InDesign annual report design is the text. Luckily, doing so is easy and straightforward.
Start by selecting the Type Tool in your Tools Panel. This is highlighted in the screenshot below.
Then, click on the existing text in your annual report template. Notice how the text is all presented in boxes—these are text boxes, and they "hold" your body copy.
Simply type or edit the text in this space. It's that easy!
Adding a new text box is easy too. Instead of clicking on existing text, click and drag to draw a new text box with your Type Tool. Then proceed to add, edit, and delete type within the space you've defined.

4. Import Images Into Your Report InDesign Template
Next, let's look at importing images into your annual report template. Often, your template may already have placeholders for images included.
With the Selection Tool selected, click on the placeholder rectangular frame where you'd like to place your image.
Then, go to File > Place. InDesign will prompt you to select the image from your computer. Do so, and then InDesign will place the image within the rectangular frame.
You can also import imagery without necessarily selecting an existing rectangular frame first. Simply go to File > Place, as we did prior. Then, single click to insert the image at actual size, or click and drag to create a new rectangular frame for your image.

5. Save vs Export Your InDesign Annual Report Template
By default, InDesign saves as an INDD file. This is an InDesign document file. Think of it like your working, back-end document. You'll want to save this file, especially if you want to make edits.
But this isn't necessarily the document your printer might want you to provide. And it's not a web-friendly format either.
Adobe InDesign can export several file types, such as PDF, IDML, ePUB documents, and more. To do so, go to File > Export to choose one of these file types.

5 Quick Tips for Better Reports, Layouts, and Designs in 2022
Do you want to craft the narrative focus for your annual report? Are you unsure of which key metrics to highlight or make sure your design stands out clearly? Then follow these quick tips. They'll also help you engage your audience of employees, customers, and shareholders.
1. Plan the Narrative of Your Annual Report Design
While there's financial data in an annual report, think about how you can craft that information into a compelling narrative. Consider these types of questions:
- Did your company restructure, land a lot of large contracts, have a standout quarter, or hit another milestone this year?
- What goals were achieved or lessons learned this year?
- How do they connect to the future of your company?
This is the material to draw your story from and start with your report design ideas.

Keep in mind, though, that design and the story you’re planning to tell are interconnected. Make sure to work within your brand guidelines—using your company’s voice—when crafting your narrative.
This is an important brand story to craft to help your audience better understand your company. It needs to purposefully communicate the progress made this year and your vision for the coming year.
2. Highlight the Right Data of Your Annual Report InDesign Template
The type of financial data you’ll be required to include in your annual report are components like:
- revenue
- profit
- percentage of market share
- and more
The larger your company, the more cumbersome this material can be.
Data can be overwhelming or incredibly clear, depending on how it’s designed and presented.
You can pick what to highlight from this information and make it stand out in your annual report. For these highlights, decide what key data supports your narrative best. Make use of charts, graphs, or various types of infographics to call out your most important information.
Learn how to add important data from your files into your annual report template in InDesign here:
3. Give Your InDesign Report Template Some Clarity
It’s important that your annual report follows design best practices where form complements function. What this means is that you display your information in the best possible format for your material.
The design style shouldn’t overwhelm or unnecessarily complicate your presentation. The style should complement your brand and help your points stand out.
It needs to be designed with a proper hierarchy that leads your readers through the elements of the page. Clear typography that's easy to read, with headings that stand out and text passages that are inviting.
Elements should be balanced with good use of white space and margins. They should all align with an internal logic to a grid and be cleverly broken with care to draw attention to key images, infographics, or callouts.
Your annual report should have an overarching design scheme that pulls all the pages together. A compelling visual narrative should fit your company and tell the story you're crafting best well.
Learn some basic design principles and how these can help elevate your creative report designs:

There are a few options to follow to make your annual report cover design more engaging. Bold colors, dynamic shapes, and compelling images are great tips.
Think visually. What image or design captures the story that your annual report is designed around? Is there a compelling metaphor or visual that fits your message best? It could be an image of your customers or an illustration of financial growth.

1. Use Infographics in Your Report Template in InDesign
Your annual report will be packed with numbers and data. And the best way to present them is using infographics. Look for an InDesign annual report template that's got infographics like charts, timelines, and diagrams.

2. Add Images to Your Report InDesign Templates
Not everything about creative report design needs to be numbers and graphs. Including photos is a design trend because it shows the readers that you put thought into the annual report. Images also help to introduce important members of the company, like the CEO and board members. Look for a report layout design with room for images.

This modern report layout design has space dedicated to images.
3. Mix the Typography of Your InDesign Annual Report Template
This design trend is about mixing two fonts to create an attractive text hierarchy. One idea is to use a serif font for headings and titles and a sans-serif typeface for body text.
Mix and match fonts for a nice contrast. But don't choose more than two if you want to keep it professional. And if you need to get new fonts, remember you can download as many as you need from our fonts library with your Envato Elements subscription.
4. Use Color in Your Annual Report InDesign Template

Common Annual Report Questions Answered (FAQ)
Perhaps your company asked you to do an annual report for the first time. Or you aren't familiar with these documents. Don't worry. It's common to have questions about annual reports.
Next up, I'll share some frequently asked questions about this financial document:
1. What Exactly Is An Annual Report?
Let's start with the basics. An annual report is a document issued yearly at the end of the fiscal year. It delivers a company's financial information to authorities, shareholders and investors.
The main purposes of an annual report are to comply with legal requirements, to show achievements, and to share next year's financial goals.
2. What Types Of Annual Reports Are There?
There are four main types of annual reports, each of them with different purposes:
- corporate annual report
- small business annual report
- nonprofit annual report
- alternative annual report
To learn more details about each of them, check this comprehensive article:
3. What Should My Annual Report Include?
An annual report may have different components, depending on the industry and type of report. But here are the main elements you should include in this document:
- CEO's letter to shareholders. Usually found at the beginning, this section provides a brief overview of the report.
- Company profile. This section includes everything authorities and investors should know about the company. Think mission, offices, directors, products and services, etc.
- Business performance overview. A brief overview of the company's financial situation.
- Financial information. The most important section of the annual report. It should include the following:
- company balance sheet and cash flow statement
- company income statement
- financial statement for shareholders
- market price of the company shares and its dividends
Review the following article to learn more about creating an annual report:
4. What Mistakes Should I Avoid in My Annual Report?
Don't worry. A creative report design may seem complicated. But if you include the key elements mentioned above and avoid the following mistakes, you'll have an effective annual report in your hands.
- Remove personality. Nobody enjoys reading a dry annual report. Especially in the CEO's letter, as this sets the tone of the entire report.
- Don't use difficult language. Don't write a technical manual full of difficult terms and business jargon. Instead, write as clearly as possible and explain complicated concepts.
- Don't add too much text. Don't take 12 pages to say what you can say in six. Write enough to get the job done and stop. Use visual elements to help you reduce text.
- Don't make it irrelevant. This is an important mistake to avoid. Many reports fail to answer the "so what" question. Don't assume the readers know the topic is relevant. When writing the annual report, ask yourself, "so what"? Establish why the topic is important and why the reader should care.
5. Why Should I Use InDesign For My Annual Report?
There are many software you could use to make an annual report. Microsoft Word and Photoshop are two examples. But the advantage of InDesign is that it's especially designed to do high-quality print documents. You can save time and create a professional-looking report in InDesign.
