5 Guidelines That Make a Great Business Card
No matter what type of business you run, some design principles are tried and true. Let's look at five principles that you can use when you design your own business cards in Photoshop.
In this section, you'll see top business card templates for Photoshop from Envato Elements. Later in this tutorial, we'll customize one of the templates to match your brand.
1. Your Unique Personal Angle
Everyone already has plenty of cards in their wallet from the insurance rep or auto salesperson that they met at a networking event. And while most people need a professional like this in their life, the competition is so stiff that your business card has to stand out.
So, what can you do to personalize your business card uniquely? The answer is to make it personal. In the business card template example above, you can see that the text starts with an "I am..." and introduces the person. That's a more personal approach than just putting your contact details on the card and hoping for a call.
Use personalization to make your business card stand out. Introduce yourself, explain how your business is different, and why someone might choose you over the crowd.
2. Simple and Bold Layouts
Business cards contain several elements: your introduction, name, contact details, and profession. With all of these details, choosing a layout that keeps the card readable is crucial. That's why it helps to use a bold and straightforward design, like the business card Photoshop template below.
In the example above, a few fundamental design principles help keep the card readable. First, simple borders block off the content into distinct sections. Also, white space (the area between content elements) allows the eye to float from one part to another.
3. Colors That Stand Out
Not every business card needs minimal and straightforward colors. Picture this: you hang your business card on a corkboard at your favorite business. Bland, flat colors are bound to fit right in with the crowd, never standing out to a potential client.
The alternative is to use a bright and bold color palette like the example that you see in the business card for Photoshop example below. There's no chance that a card like this one goes unnoticed.
Since you're likely hiring a print shop or online service to print your cards, don't worry about your ink use. Choose flattering, complementary color schemes to make your business card stand out.
4. Choose an "On-Brand" Design Style
When you're making a business card in Photoshop, you'll have a ton of options to choose from. There are as many templates as there are personalities, so you'll always be able
The flowery business card template PSD above is an excellent example of tailoring your business card branding to your style. Your business card can serve as a first impression, so you'll want to represent your style and brand faithfully.
5. Use Completely Unconventional Design Styles
To build a great business card, you've to design one that stands out from the crowd. We've looked at a few design principles so far, but it's time to think entirely out of the box with an example like this Cassette business card.
Don't be afraid to be unconventional when you're making a business card in Photoshop. The key is to be remembered. It's not even crucial that the card matches what you do.
In the next section, you'll see that templates are simply a starting point. They're still customizable, but you save hours of work. You can avoid learning how to create your own business cards in Photoshop by just filling in a template.
How to Make a Business Card in Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is a Swiss Army Knife for designers. It can do practically anything, and that's why graphic design generalists love it.
But no matter how much you know about Adobe Photoshop, it's always best to use assets that already have most of the design work done. Building your business card becomes a matter of just updating the placeholders when you use business card templates for Photoshop.
In this section, we're going to work with a business card template for Photoshop from Envato Elements. Later in this tutorial, you'll learn why Elements is the best value for creative professionals.
We'll work with the Minimal Business Card Template in this example to customize an easy-to-use business card template. This is one of the thousands of templates you can source when you subscribe to Envato Elements.
1. The Starting Point
After you download a template, click on it to open it up in Adobe Photoshop. You'll see it appear in the standard Photoshop window.
Make sure that you can find the Layers panel when working in Photoshop. Many settings are controlled on this panel, and customizing it'll help you tweak the business card design.
2. Replace the Logo
First, let's start by replacing the logo with one of our own. I'll open up the LOGO layer folder, and select the preset logo image, then press Delete on my keyboard to remove it. I'll also click on the text on the canvas and delete it to clear the deck for my design.
In my case, my logo image file includes the text. From my macOS Finder window, I'll drag and drop it onto my Photoshop window. It's placed on the canvas, and then I'll move it to reposition it into the perfect placement on the card.
Now, let's customize the border on the edges. On the layers panel, right-click or control-click on the Rectangle layer and choose Blending Options, then select a color overlay that matches your branding. That'll customize your template to match exactly your design style.
3. Customize the Back of the Business Card Template
In the template we selected, there are separate PSD templates for the front and back of the business card. As you open up the back PSD template, you'll find that it contains the contact details that every business card needs.
Most of the tweaks on this side are covered in the section above, but the other tweaks are amongst the most important. Double click over any of the text placeholders and type over them to replace them with your text.
That's it! Soon, you'll have a print-ready file with your contact details. Just export it as a print-ready flat image, and you're ready to print your business card.
